Why Use A Meditation Chair?
Meditation is an ancient art used to center the mind and relax the body, it is elemental and free.
So you may wonder why anyone would buy a special meditation chair. Keep reading to find out why even the most experienced at meditation say it is money well spent!
A Meditation Chair is a chair or seat specifically designed to help keep your body in a comfortable but observant state, so that you can fully appreciate and enjoy your meditation experience.
Many people find that sitting in traditional meditative or yoga-style poses becomes very uncomfortable, very quickly. It’s hard to relax and release the mind when your back is aching, your legs feel stiff, your ankles dig into the floor and your hips and bottom go to sleep!
These problems are often worse when you are new to meditation, because your body is just not used to being in these meditation positions. This makes the whole meditation journey more difficult, and will mean you are more likely to give up before you realize the true and wonderful benefits of meditation.
Stiffness and inflexibility are also more of a problem as you age, or if you have injuries or medical conditions like arthritis.
In all these cases, it would be a shame to give up because of discomfort, because meditation can be extremely beneficial. So whether you are new or experienced, young or old, a meditation chair will help to make your sessions easier and much more enjoyable.
Meditation chairs are specially designed to relieve the aches and pains by supporting your body. They usually have ergonomic angles that relieve the pressure on your lower back, or cushions that raise the hips and provide padding for the ankles.
Meditation chairs were first made in China, and were originally just a chair with a wide seat that would allow the legs to be drawn up and crossed. They did not look very comfortable, as you can see in this picture from the Ming Dynasty, but they did give some support to the back and gave people the option of meditation in a chair rather than on the floor.
There are still some very simple, wooden meditation chairs available today which are specially designed to keep your body in a supported, low pressure position.
But there is also a wide range of very comfortable, ergonomically designed meditation chairs that will help you meditate more deeply and comfortably. Make sure you read the post series on the Reviews of Meditation Chairs.
